Research

My research focuses on Environmental Chemistry and Materials Science. Over the last few years, my main interests have been the occurrence, fate, and impact of microplastics and nanoplastics in various compartments, including those leading to human exposure. Additionally, my research covers the fate, toxicity, and removal of aqueous (micro)pollutants from water and wastewater, as well as the production of nanostructured surfaces with diverse applications in Environmental Technology.

I have participated in over 50 research projects and contracts, and authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific articles in high-impact journals (H-Scopus = 48). Additionally, I have supervised 22 Doctoral Theses. I regularly serve as a project evaluator for various national and international funding agencies. Furthermore, I hold positions as an associate editor for several journals, including RSC Advances (The Royal Society of Chemistry), Nanotechnology for Environmental Engineering (Springer), Microplastics (MDPI), Toxics (MDPI), Water Emerging Contaminants & Nanoplastics (OAE Publishing Inc.), and Cambridge Prisms: Plastics (Cambridge University Press). Since 2020, I have been leading the Research Network on Plastic Waste in the Environment, EnviroPlaNet.

ENVIROPLANET

Research Network on Plastic Waste in the Environment

EnviroPlaNet is a meeting point for research groups and associations working on various aspects related to pollution caused by plastic materials. EnviroPlaNet began its activities in 2020, being granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation as a Thematic Research Network coordinated by the University of Alcalá. Since then, the network has grown with the objective of offering more groups opportunities for cooperation, such as exchanging experiences, accessing research resources, and participating in dissemination activities.
